While the club is currently on it’s Summer break from training a number of Athletes have been very busy recently in various track and field Championships. Pride of place must surely go to Sarah Hayes who won a Bronze medal in the under 16 girls Shot Competition at the All-Ireland track and field Championships in Tullamore on 21st July. Her best throw was 11.37 which was a brillant achievement for Sarah.
On Sunday 14th July the Munster Development games were held in Castleisland, Co.Kerry. Andrew Collins was in fine form winning two Bronze medals in both the 80 m and 600m races with two excellent runs while in the Girls under 14 shot, Alicia O Neill also won a Bronze medal with some great throws. Jack O Neill was most unlucky in the under 10 sprint to lose out on a medal in a Photo finish.
At the Munster Masters track and field Championships held at CIT Track, Billy O Flaherty had a brilliant double gold medal win in both the 800 and 1500 meter races while Maureen Glanton also had a double gold medal win in both the Discus and Hammer while Patrick O Brien had two Bronze medals in both the 1500 and 3000m races.
At the County masters track and field held in CIT Patrick O Brien had a gold medal in the 3000m and a Silver in both the 200 and 400m while John Mc Carthy had gold in the 200m and 400m and a Silver in the 100m.
At the John Buckley Sports track and field Senior League meetings also held in CIT John Collins has been putting in some excellent performances and on the Aug Bank Holiday Monday he won the 800m race at the Rising Sun open Sports while Billy O Flaherty finished second.
Well done to all Athletes who represented the club in the many track and field events throughout the Country.
Finally a reminder that the Club’s Annual 10k Road race and Walk goes ahead this year on Sunday 29th Sept: at 1pm and will follow the same route as last year. It was a great success last year with over 300 participants and it is hoped that this figure will be surpassed in 2013.
