Athletes from Skibbereen Athletic Club have sussessfully competed at track and field and road races recently i. In the Munster senior championships, Maureen Glanton delivered some excellent throws in the discus to capture the bronze medal and she just missed out on a similar medal in the hammer, finishing fourth.
At the Dunmanway 10k road where there as a very big entry, James O’Driscoil had a marvellous run to finish 10th. Paudie McCarthy and Stephen O’Mahony produced great runs to finish first and second respectively in the masters section.
In a road race held in Courtmacsherry recently , Andy Collins had a very good run to win his masters section. On Friday July 15th , Skibbereen Athletic Club successfully staged a West Cork juvenille athletics trck and field league under ideal weather conditions . The many athletes from Skibb AC that competed did themselves and the club proud as they won numerous medals of various colours for their great efforts.
On Friday evening last three athletes from the club successfully competed in the county masters championships at CIT track. Paddy O’Brien performed superbly to win a full set of medals as he won gold in the 800mts, a silver in the shot putt and a bronze medal in the 1500m to complete a memorable occasion.
Andy Collins had two very good runs when winning silver in the 3000m and bronze in the 800m, while Stephen O’Mahony had a very good run to win a silver medal in the 1500mts. On Sunday last the Munster juvenile B track and field championships were staged in Templemore, Co Tipperary.
Mallaidh O’Neill delivered two excellent performances and was crowned Munster champion at 60mts and long jump at U9. Micheál Sheehy at U9 was equally impressive and he was also a dual Munster champion at 300mts and ball throw. Andrew Collins at U11 was in great form and he won bronze medals in both 80mts and 600mts. Others who competed very well even though medals eluded them were Alicia O’Neill, Jennifer and Olivia Collins, Conor O’Neill, Seán, James and Eleen McCarthy and Danny Coakley.
Athletics training will now cease for a few weeks but will resume again towards the end of August. A West Cork juvenile league will take place at the Town Park, Bandon on this Friday evening at 7pm.
